Can I get a tattoo before the age of 18?
A. No. While legal in NSW with parental permission, Understairs Ink does not tattoo anyone under 18, regardless of consent.
Q.
How much does a tattoo cost?
A. Tattoo costs vary based on size, complexity, placement, and the artist's experience. Pricing will be discussed after you submit your booking request or during your consultation. Each artist sets their own rate, though our studio minimum is $100 AUD.

Can I use a numbing cream?
A. We advise against numbing creams as they can affect skin texture, impact tattoo quality, and potentially cause complications when wearing off. Clear communication about what you're feeling helps us ensure your session is safe and progressing well.

How long do I need to wait to donate blood?
A. Under NSW regulations, you're eligible to donate blood just one week after getting tattooed at a licensed Australian studio such as Understairs Ink.

Do you perform 'cover-up' tattoos?
A. We provide cover-up services depending on the artist's assessment. Please indicate this in your booking request and include photos of the existing tattoo. An in-person consultation may be needed. Note that some tattoos cannot be effectively covered, or may require laser treatment first to achieve your vision.

Are there restrictions on tattoo designs or placements?
A. Yes. We reserve the right to decline tattoo requests that feel inappropriate, out of scope, or don't align with our values. We will not replicate or copy other artists' work without proper licensing, but we're happy to create inspired designs or adaptations. We do not tattoo offensive, racist, or bigoted imagery. Our artists may also decline certain body placements (including genitals, hands, or face) if they feel uncomfortable or believe it's not in your best interest.

Can I be tattooed if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
A. No. Understairs Ink does not tattoo pregnant or breastfeeding clients. We recommend waiting at least one year postpartum and 12 weeks after completing breastfeeding.

Do tattoo's hurt?
Pain levels vary depending on placement, your pain tolerance, and tattoo size. Most describe it as a scratching sensation with vibrating pressure. If you're sensitive to pain or prone to fainting, please inform your artist. Helpful tips: bring headphones, look away, eat beforehand, bring snacks and water, and consider a stress ball.

Do you perform cosmetic tattooing?
A. No. We do not provide cosmetic tattooing procedures such as microblading, freckle tattoos, or lip blushing at Understairs Ink. Cosmetic tattooing is a different specialty from traditional tattooing and should be performed by a licensed specialist.

Do you perform 'hand-poked' tattoos?
A. We do not currently offer hand-poked tattoo services at Understairs Ink, as this is typically an artist-specific specialty. Occasionally, guest artists who specialize in hand-poking may work with us — you can keep an eye out on our socials.
Q.
Do you tattoo over scarring?
A. Yes, but this depends on the artist's assessment. Tattooing over scars may cause design distortion, ink blurring, and can be more painful depending on the scar type. The area must be completely healed—typically at least one year after the injury. Please consult your GP about an appropriate timeline before booking your session.
